Figurative Language
1. Simile
Simile is a figurative language that tries to compare things by using connective words like or as.
- I’m like a shooting star. This line is classified as a simile since she uses the word 'like' to compare herself to a shooting star. This line implies that she is unable to return to the previous location before arriving at the new location. I’ve gotten so far in life, and can’t just start over. It's like a shooting star; when it hits the ground, it can't return to the sky.
2. Metaphor
Metaphor is a statement that compares two things that are not alike. Unlike similes, metaphors do not use the words “like” or “as.”
- A whole new world. This line is classified to Metaphor; It is making a comparison between the outside of the castle and the new world. However, there really is no such thing like a new world. It is called a new world because the princess has never seen it before because she is always confined to the castle. So, he claims that the castle symbolizes an old world, while the outside means a new world. Because she can see new things that she cannot see in the castle
- A new fantastic point of view. This is a comparison of the outside of the castle, something only the princess realizes about, to the new point of view, which is that it looks awesome for the princess.
- it’s crystal clear. The line compares Aladdin's evident view of the world while being on the carpet towards the clear crystal. It wanted to explain the belief that the world is as evident and stunning as a crystal.
- through an endless diamond sky. It is explicitly comparing a star to a diamond because we know that a star and a diamond have a similarity in that they are both colorful and shining. It symbolizes that the sky is full of stars and shimmered like a diamond.
3. Personification
Personification is the figurative language that applies human characteristics into an abstract quality. So personification is trying to illustrate that inhuman can do what humans do, which in fact is impossible.
- With new horizons to pursue. The lyric implies that the horizon can run like humans until it is continued to pursue. The horizon does not move; it stays. As a result, it can be concluded that it is personification, implying that there are many things to see in the world.
- Tell me, princess, now when did you last let your heart decide. The lyrics “heart decide” implies that the girl in the song can choose what makes her happy.
4. Hyperbole
Hyperbole is an exaggeration that is created to emphasize a point or bring out a sense of humor
- I can show you the world. This does not imply that the man can show the girl the real world. It means he can show her many things, but it is stated in an unexpected way of showing that the man can do many things for the girl.
- A hundred thousand things to see. The meaning of this line is so many things to see. It can be seen that it shows the overstatement. Because in reality the things to see are uncountable.
2. Sound
Alliteration: is the repetition of beginning consonant sounds.
- Shining, shimmering splendid. It is classified as alliteration since the constant sound ‘S’ is being repeated at the beginning of the word. This line is describing the world and how beautiful it is.
- Soaring, thumbling, freewheeling. It is also alliteration because the ending ‘ing’ is repeated. This line is describing the up and down of the journey.
